The City of Shoreline was incorporated on August 31, 1995, and operates as a Council/Manager form of government. The Council is comprised of seven members, elected at large by citizens of Shoreline. They are part-time officials who exercise the legislative powers of the City and determine matters of policy.
The Mayor is a council member selected by the Council to chair meetings, authenticate documents and serves as the City’s ceremonial head. Various advisory boards and commissions help support the work of the Council. The Council appoints a fulltime City Manager who serves as the professional administrator of the organization, coordinating day-to-day activities.
Shoreline is home to an increasingly diverse population – ethnically, racially, and economically. One in five of our residents is foreign born, 14% are of Asian descent, and fully one in four speak a language other than English at home. In our schools, nearly 45% of students represent diverse racial and ethnic heritage. Students speak over 76 languages with 18% speaking a language other than English in their homes.
Covering 11.74 square miles, Shoreline has a population of approximately 55,000 residents. It is primarily residential with more than 70% of the households being single-family residences. Over the years, the Shoreline community has developed a reputation for strong neighborhoods, excellent schools, and abundant parks. Shoreline is also recognized as being a regional leader in environmental sustainability.
